  1. The Economics of Productivity in Asia and Australia

The Economics of Productivity in Asia and Australia

    Renuka Mahadevan
Productivity growth has long been recognised by both economists and non-economists as being necessary for all economies aspiring to raise their standard of living. Thus, Renuka Mahadevan aims to highlight the conceptual differences, advantages and disadvantages of the various total factor productivity (TFP) measures and suggests processes and strategies for choosing the best technique to draw up policies for sustainable growth. 7. From Industrial Districts to Local Development

From Industrial Districts to Local Development

Giacomo Becattini, Marco Bellandi, Gabi Dei Ottati, Fabio Sforzi
From Industrial Districts to Local Development introduces a set of papers representing the main contribution of the ‘Florence school’ to the recent literature on industrial districts. The authors illustrate that the revitalisation of the concept of industrial districts, returning to Alfred Marshall’s nineteenth-century writings, is rooted in an unconventional interpretation of the economic development of Tuscany after the Second World War. 9. Market Failure or Success

    Market Failure or Success

Edited by Tyler Cowen, Eric Crampton
Recent years have seen the development of new theories of market failure based on asymmetric information and network effects. According to the new paradigm, we can expect substantial failure in the markets for labor, credit, insurance, software, new technologies and even used cars, to give but a few examples. This volume brings together the key papers on the subject, including classic papers by Joseph Stiglitz, George Akerlof and Paul David. The book provides powerful theoretical and empirical rebuttals challenging the assumptions of these new models and questioning the usual policy conclusions. It goes on to demonstrate how an examination of real markets and careful experimental studies are unable to verify the new theories. New frontiers for research are also suggested. Learn More

  10. Strategic Multilateral Exchange

    Strategic Multilateral Exchange

    Jean J. Gabszewicz
Jean Gabszewicz’s new book is devoted to the study of strategic multilateral exchange. Contrary to the classical competitive paradigm in which agents are assumed to behave as price takers, here traders are allowed to consciously behave as strategic agents who aim to influence trade to their own advantage. This is usually done in oligopoly theory using a partial equilibrium approach while in this case a system of interrelated markets is considered. Learn More

  12. Industrial Location Economics

    Industrial Location Economics

    Edited by Philip McCann
Because space is not homogenous, economic activities occur in different locations. Understanding the reasons behind this and understanding exactly how industries are spatially organized is the central theme of this book. Industrial Location Economics discusses different aspects of industrial location behaviour from a variety of theoretical and empirical perspectives. Each of the analytical traditions provides insights into the nature of industrial location behaviour and the factors which can influence it. Learn More

  13. Buyer Power and Competition in European Food Retailing

Buyer Power and Competition in European Food Retailing

Roger Clarke, Stephen Davies, Paul Dobson, Michael Waterson
In this book, leading experts in the field examine the effects of the recent growth in concentration in the European food retailing sector. In particular, the book develops a number of buyer power propositions and builds on the previous work of several of the authors, to consider how the growth of large supermarket chains affects competition in food retailing. The authors outline the theoretical and policy analysis underpinning the work and assess evidence on the size and growth of supermarket chains across the EU. Whilst not entirely critical, they suggest that there is strong evidence in some countries that supermarkets use their buying power to impose unfair terms and conditions on suppliers, particularly affecting small suppliers. 14. Industrial Districts

    Industrial Districts

    Ivana Paniccia
The multidisciplinary, quantitative approach adopted by the author, enables her to ‘de-structure’ the ‘canonical’ idea of the ID and evaluate the normative value. Supported by multivariate and econometric analyses, she identifies four general types of ID each with different development paths, performances, inter-organizational relations, and regulatory rules and institutions. The results demonstrate that IDs on average achieve better static or dynamic economic performance than non-ID areas. The analysis also highlights critical points of rupture in the socio-economic equilibrium of IDs which may impair their future competitiveness and social sustainability. The author offers a critical appraisal of the organizational literature on IDs, claiming for caution in their depiction as ‘cooperative systems’ and goes on to present the first steps towards a ‘microfoundation’ of a theory on IDs. Technology Transfer and International Production

    Jin W. Cyhn
Korea has been at the centre of intense debate concerning the role of government in economic development. Taking an in-depth approach, this book analyses the path of Korea’s industrial technology development. In contrast to many previous studies on Korea, the author argues that the role of foreign multinational enterprises has been significant while the government’s was surprisingly limited in scope. 16. Price and Markup Behaviour in Manufacturing

Price and Markup Behaviour in Manufacturing

    Michael Olive
Price and Markup Behaviour in Manufacturing examines the role that cost, competing domestic and foreign prices, domestic demand and market structure play in determining the price and markup of manufacturing firms across a range of countries and industries. Michael Olive models imperfectly competitive behaviour at the firm level, establishing logical relationships between these variables. Aggregating these relationships gives predictions for price and markup at the industry level. Learn More
