This insightful book is a timely response to three of the most significant planetary crises facing humanity: climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss. Usha Iyer-Raniga explores how the One Planet Network’s Sustainable Buildings and Construction (SBC) programme has provided a clear and actionable pathway to address these critical issues.
Launched in 2015, the SBC programme has vastly improved understanding of sustainable construction and has supported and promoted mainstream sustainable building solutions. This unique book outlines the history of the SBC programme, its major successes, its global application and the challenges it faces. Iyer-Raniga highlights advancements in current practice, in particular the mapping of circular built environment indicators against relevant Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Looking ahead, the book proposes opportunities to further develop the insights gained from this programme, and considers the future impact of pursuing circular practices in the building and construction sector.
Informative and accessible, this book is a vital read for built environment professionals working in planning, architecture, engineering, procurement, building and construction. Its consideration of the relationship between circular construction and the SDGs is also of importance to policymakers and stakeholders working in sustainability, as well as students and academics specialising in the built environment.

‘The Sustainable Buildings and Construction Programme book – Circular Practices in Buildings and Construction to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals – stands as the evidence to the remarkable progress made in advancing sustainability within the built environment. By championing circular practices, this publication provides a roadmap for future action. It is urgent that we prioritise collaborative solutions that promote resilience and inclusivity. On behalf of the Cities Unit, I support the SBC Programme legacy for its invaluable contributions and look forward to continued collaboration in shaping a more sustainable and circular future within the built environment.’
– Gulnara Roll, Head of Cities Unit/Industry and Economy Division, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
‘Through its consistent commitment to sustainability, the Sustainable Buildings and Construction Programme has paved the way for transformative change within the built environment. This book not only commemorates past achievements but also serves as a guiding light for future endeavours committed to mainstream circularity within the built environment. As we navigate the challenges posed by the triple planetary crises of climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss, it is imperative that we embrace circular practices and material efficiency. On behalf of the One Planet Network, we reaffirm our commitment to fostering a dedicated Circular Built Environment working group that continues to take forward the work of the former SBC programme with the aim to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.’
– Jorge Laguna-Celis, Head of the 10YFP, One Planet Network Secretariat at United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
‘We cannot combat the spiralling socio-economic challenges facing people and the planet without moving to a circular economy. As members of the SBC network, the World Green Building Council has been proud to support this coalition''s collaborative action in tackling the triple planetary crises of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. This book provides a timely overview of the successes of this cooperation, as well as an urgent reminder of the need for continued cross-sector collaboration if we aspire to achieve a decarbonised and resilient future.’
– Cristina Gamboa, CEO, World Green Building Council
‘The One Planet Network Sustainable Buildings and Construction Program has been an instrumental initiative to bring circular economy thinking into the construction industry, globally. Circularity is an imperative to reduce the polluting impact of an economic system that makes up 40% of global energy-related CO2 emissions, 50% of global material use and 40% of waste streams. And it is a huge economic and business opportunity, fostering innovation and new business models for doing more with less. Thanks to the One Planet Network, circular economy is moving from the fringes to becoming a core strategy for unlocking new value and reducing the footprint of the built environment.’
